The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently approved PROGESTA for marketing in Nigeria.

PROGESTA is a contraceptive injection containing a progestogen: a hormone similar to the one produced naturally by the ovaries. It is injected into the muscle (usually the upper arm or buttocks) every 3 months by a health professional. PROGESTA is safe, highly effective, affordable, discreet and convenient for use.

DKT Nigeria is committed and focused in providing a wide choice of contraceptive and reproductive health products and services to Nigerian women and couples. DKT has an extensive distribution network covering all 36 states and the federal capital territory, and ensures availability, accessibility and affordability of the products and services at all times including during the unprecedented situation we all found ourselves with the COVID-19 pandemic. DKT is the largest contraceptive and reproductive health provider in the country with the largest product portfolio and directly serves thousands of retail outlets and private and public medical facilities.

PROGESTA’s approval increases the contraceptive choice for women and addresses some of the reasons commonly cited for unmet contraceptive need. PROGESTA is expected to contribute to increasing the modern contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) in Nigeria which the target has been set at 27% by 2020. DKT is poised to ensuring that PROGESTA will be available in the private and public sector facilities.

PROGESTA is developed with high quality in mind. PROGESTA is packed in blister which is designed with Tamper-Evidence-Packaging feature which is the first of its kind in Nigeria. If the foil seal is damaged, it is easily noticeable proof of tampering. The TEP feature is made to protect the quality of the product and it is an integral part of DKT’s ESAQ (Effective, Safe, Affordable, Quality) assurance logo.

PROGESTA will be available for distribution by June 1st.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nigeria accounts for 20% of all the global maternal deaths. It is estimated that between 2005 and 2015, over 600,000 of maternal deaths occurred and no less than 900 000 maternal near-miss cases occurred in the country.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains the leading cause of maternal deaths. Other key contributors include unsafe abortion, sepsis and hypertensive disorder (including pre-eclampsia and eclampsia). Most of these death and health consequences are entirely preventable since solutions are well-known.

Ensuring safe pregnancies and childbirth is critical. Family planning allows women to space their pregnancies and can delay pregnancy in younger women, who often face an increased risk of complications. Long-acting reversible contraception like Intra-Uterine Device (IUD) can serve as an effective primary prevention strategy to reduce maternal mortality rate.

DKT Nigeria distributes its own brand of IUDs called Lydia. It is one of the most reliable and safe methods for child spacing and pregnancy prevention. It is a non-hormonal, reversible, long acting contraceptive method that prevents pregnancy for up to 10 years. It can be removed anytime a woman is ready to have a child, and return to fertility is immediate. Lydia IUD is 99.2% effective in preventing pregnancy and it is safe, very affordable and widely available.

On another front, DKT Nigeria helps in reducing maternal deaths by distributing Miso-Fem; a high-quality brand of misoprostol 200mcg that is tested and trusted to effectively prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), – the leading cause of maternal deaths in Nigeria. The dosage guidelines produced by FIGO and WHO for preventing PPH is 600mcg orally
