The world of feats is one to really explore. Here is a Nigerian woman who is West Africa’s first female pharmacist. Her name is Ore Green.
Miss Ore Green was born in Lagos in 1885 as a younger daughter of a former superintendent of the Lagos Detective Force, Francis Colley Green. She was educated at CMS Girls Seminary, St. Mary Convent School. She was fluent in English, French, Latin and she was also a gifted actress. She even played famously the part of Portia in a production of William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Vernice” in Lagos in June and July 1911.
She obtained a first class certificate in the Theory of Music from the London College of Music. When she acquired Apothecaries Certificate of the Pharmaceutical Society of London, she became the first West African Woman to obtain a practical pharmaceutical qualification. Also when she successfully passed her qualifying examinations, she acquired her Certificate of Westminster College of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Botany in 1916.
She worked in several places but in a bid more to Lagos and its environs, Ore set up her own establishment. There she practiced as a Nurse and Pharmacist at 71_Campbell Street, Lagos. She was fondly called Nurse Green and she is indeed a highly accomplished lady.
