The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), has alerted pharmaceutical importers and pharmacy owners of ban on Freselamine infusion solution 500 ml from Turkey, urging them not to import it for safety reasons.
Citing Federal Government directive, PCN Registrar, Elijah Mohammed said in a circular to pharmacies across the country that Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency has withdrawn Freselamine 10% Amino Acid IV Infusion Solution 500ml, Batch No. 18004 with an expiry date of June 2020 from circulation. ‘’The infusion is manufactured by Turkish Pharmaceutical Company – Osel llac San. Ve Tic. Inc,” he said
The PCN boss disclosed that Freselamine infusion is used in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy (a decline in brain function that occurs as a result of severe liver disease) in patients with cirrhosis or hepatitis.
He further said that infusion provides nutritional support for patients with liver diseases who require parenteral nutrition and are intolerant of general-purpose amino acid injections, which are contraindicated in patients with hepatic coma.
According to NDrugs website, as saying that administering Freselamin comes with a load of side effects such as weight gain, swelling, increase in renal activities, water intoxication and infection at the site of injection among others.
